How To Spot A Rare Penny

We all know that one person in our family who is a little bit weird about money. You know, the one who never spends a penny unless they absolutely have to, and who is always looking for ways to save money. Well, it turns out that there may be a reason for their penny-pinching ways – they may be onto something!

There are a few rare pennies out there that are worth a LOT more than their face value. So, if you’re looking to make a quick buck, or just want to impress your penny-pinching relatives, here’s how to spot a rare penny.

1. 1943 Copper Penny

This penny is made of copper, instead of the usual zinc-coated steel. This is because, during World War II, the US government needed copper for ammunition, so they made pennies out of steel instead. A few copper pennies slipped through the cracks, though, and are now worth about $85,000!

2. 1944 Steel Penny

As we mentioned, during WWII, the US government used steel for pennies because they needed the copper for ammunition. A few steel pennies were made in 1944, too, but they were supposed to be destroyed. A few made it into circulation, though, and are now worth about $10,000.

3. 1955 Double Die Penny

This penny is worth about $28,000, and it’s pretty easy to spot. The date on the coin is doubled, so it looks like “195555.”

4. 1974 Aluminum Penny

This penny is made of aluminum, instead of the usual copper. A few of these were made as test coins, but they were never put into circulation. One of these pennies was sold at auction for $1 million!

5. 1992 Close AM Penny

This penny is worth about $20, and it’s pretty easy to spot, too. The “AM” in “America” is close together on this penny.

So, there you have it! These are just a few of the rare pennies that could be out there. Keep your eyes peeled the next time you’re rummaging through your change, and you could end up finding a small fortune.
